When choosing moldings in the past, the selection was very limited. Now, the choice of materials for moldings and baseboards has expanded. Homeowners and contractors must choose between MDF molding, PVC molding, and hardwood molding. But how do they compare and which one is worth purchasing?

Since 1937, Jaeger Lumber has been proudly serving residential and commercial clients throughout New Jersey, providing them with premium quality building materials, including trim and moldings. Here, we dive deep into the different compositions available to help you make more informed decisions when it comes to your molding.

MDF Molding

Short for medium-density fiberboard, MDF moldings are an engineered wood material manufactured from a combination of wood fibers, resin, and wax. What makes them an attractive option for customers is how they mimic the look of natural wood. You can cut MDF moldings to precise measurements, making them an ideal choice for various residential and commercial applications. The advantages of MDF molding include:

  • Relatively inexpensive: In most cases, when compared to other materials, MDF is a much more budget-friendly option. The price disparity is most noticeable for larger projects.
  • Easy installation: Because of their soft material, MDF moldings are easily cut and resistant to splitting from the force of power-driven or hammered nails.
  • Flexible: Homes or buildings with curved walls pose a challenge for trim. The soft material of MDF molding allows it to bend enough to outfit tougher spaces that aren’t quite flat.
  • Can be painted: Generally, MDF moldings come pre-primed and ready for paint, allowing you to apply whichever color suits your space best.

PVC Molding

More and more customers are using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) moldings for a variety of applications both inside and outside. The biggest advantage of PVC molding is that it’s completely waterproof, making it an ideal option for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and outdoors. PVC moldings are extremely long-lasting. Unlike wood, they will not rot, cup, split, twist, or warp over time. Additionally, because plastic isn’t comprised of any organic materials, PVC moldings are insect-resistant.

However, these advantages come at a price. PVC moldings and trim tend to come in at a higher price point than other materials. When only installed in a bathroom, the price disparity may not be much of a difference. However, if outfitting a large area with PVC molding, costs can quickly add up.

Hardwood Molding

Wood has always been one of the most widely used materials in buildings and houses and continues to be today. Hardwood moldings are shaped, refined, and properly treated to improve durability. The beauty of the grain displayed in hardwood moldings is unmatched. Hardwood is a much stronger material compared to others on the market. Because of this, hardwood moldings are ideal for a high-traffic, high-impact environment.

Installation of hardwood moldings can be tricky. The hardwood can split if not nailed in with the proper technique. This is not a problem for MDF and PVC moldings. Because of this, installation should be performed by professionals.
